Historia.
The first found Archaelogical remains date back to the time before the Bronze Age (200-1200 BC);Son Simó,Son Siurana de Dalt,etc. After conquering the island,the Roman Consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus founded the town of Pol.lentia in AD.123.He embellished his conquest as if it were a miniature Rome by constructing temples,buildings,palaces,townhouses and a theatre.The invasions of the Vandals in the 5th. Century AD plunged Pol.lentia into a process of a decadence and destruction. In 902,the Arab conquered Majorca an the name of Alcudia(the hill)some other place names as Guinyent,Biniatria,Gatamoix or Alcanada are all that´s left of the Moslem rule. In
1229 conquered the Catalan King Jaume I,the Majorcan Island. During the popular revolt of the Germanies the Majorcan nobility sheltered in Alcudia. Finished the revolt, Emperor Charles V declared it to be “Faithful city” in 1523. The second ring of wall dates from the 17th century.The main destination was to reforce the already existing walls an to defend the town. The two rings of wall remained until the 19th century when they started suffering the process of demolition due to the expansion and sanitation of the town. Alcudia town and the archaeoiligical site of Pol.lentia were declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1963. In
the last few years several projects have been carried out in order to
conserve and protect the area. The
“plan of highest quality” has a main destination the promotion
of the Roman city, improving, arranging and singposting the paths and
walls that connect the different archaeological sites. Thanks to this
“plan of highest quality” intempretative recourses have
been created to understand well the archaeological site. The town centre experienced many changes in the last years by realising the “PERI”. The main artery and some adjacents streets have been pedestrianized. Thanks to the plan of the facades restauration by the Town Council and the Illes Balears government a lot of houses have been restored. All
this led to its being among the cities of most cultural attraction and
due to that many tourists come to visit the town.
